Parson’s Trail (8/14/15)

WHEN:  9:00 a.m.; Friday, August 14, 2015

MEET AT:  Tuzigoot RAP parking area.  Located in Clarkdale, just off of Broadway.  Go through Clarkdale or Old Town Cottonwood, and continue to follow the signs to Tuzigoot National Monument.  Just after crossing the bridge over the Verde River, take the second right (before arriving at Tuzigoot NM), and follow the dirt road back towards the river.  There’s a large parking area here.  We can leave cars here, and carpool out to the trail head.

The trail head is 10 miles out Sycamore Canyon Road, unpaved but mostly suitable for passenger cars; probably about a 20 minute drive from the meeting place.

DONATION FOR CARPOOL DRIVERS:  $3 per rider

DESCRIPTION:  Easy.  Apx. 4.5 mi round trip/CEG ~600′.  Well maintained system trail.  Out and back hike.

Parson’s Trail takes you into Sycamore Canyon Wilderness.  This lower section is a lush riparian area, with lots of shade and a lovely babbling brook.  Along the way, we’ll encounter one of the springs that feeds the creek.  Our destination will be the Blue Hole, a popular swimming spot.  Bring a lunch, a swimsuit, and a beach towel, and we’ll hang out here as long as we like before hiking out.  The first 1/4 mile drops a couple hundred feet, and the trail is level from there on out, with a couple of creek crossings that may get your feet wet.  It’s only a little over 2 miles to the Blue Hole, but we may want to explore a little further up canyon if the mood strikes us.

If you’d like a little preview of what to expect, here are some photos from when I took the class there a couple of years ago.
