Canyoneering

canyoneeringWhat is canyoneering?  Well, it’s sort of like hiking on steroids.  Canyoneering is traveling in canyons (usually narrow ones) using a variety of techniques that may include walking, route finding, problem solving, scrambling, climbing, jumping, rappelling, and/or swimming.

Here is a good explanatory video that gives you a flavor of what canyoneering is all about.

Here’s some video of Bear Canyon, on the Mogollon Rim, which I recently went down.  Some fun!!

If you are interested in developing the skills necessary to explore the beautiful canyons of the southwest, there are a number of commercial outfitters who offer canyoneering courses and instructional trips.
